- Colon cancer (colorectal cancer) consists of the colon and rectum (large intestine) . When food enter the colon, water is absorbed, and the food residue is converted into waste by bacteria.
- Most colon cancer starts as a growth on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. This growth is called polyps.
- Colon Cancer is Singapore’s top killer, affecting more than 1,865 people each year.
How colon cancer spreads?
- If cancer forms in a polyp, it can grow into the walls of the colon or rectum over time.
- From the innermost layer and grows outwards to other layers.
- From there it can spread to the other parts of the body.
Risk factors
- Age. Men and women aged 50 and above has an increased risk of colon cancer
- Personal/Family History. If you/your relatives have history of colorectal polyps or has been diagnosed with colon cancer, your risk of developing colon cancer is higher.
- Dietary habits. If you’re eating a lot of unhealthy, high fat and processed food, it can cause major blockage on your colon and rectum.
- Obesity/inactive physical lifestyle
- Infrequent bowel movements (constipation). If you haven’t been able to have regular bowel movements, it means your food residue is stuck in the large intestine, which contributes to increased risk of colon cancer.
Symptoms
- Blood in your stools
- Change in bowel habits
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Presence of a lump in the abdomen
Prevention
